Who We Are

The Belize Federation of Fishers (BFF) is a fisher community focused, conservation organization of and for all commercial fishers working in Belize. The BFF is the umbrella organization for most commercial fisher associations in Belize and has been recognized as the voice for the commercial fishers both locally, regionally and internationally. It is an organization established by commercial fishers for commercial fishers. Its primary role is education, capacity building and advocacy.

The Federation was registered on October 4th 2011 and incorporated on April 30th 2013. As part of its structure, the Federation is open to membership from fisherman associations, cooperatives and individuals who are either citizen or permanent residents of Belize, and are full time fishermen.

The BFF seeks to provide a united voice and point of action for issues and concerns related to all marine resources, the community’s dependent upon those resources and BFF’s members who harvest those resources. BFF works very closely with all coastal fishing communities across Belize, from North to South, namely: Sarteneja, Chunox, Copper Bank, Belize City, Dangriga, Hopkins, Riversdale, Placencia, Independence, Monkey River, Punta Negra and Punta Gorda.

The Federation’s Executive Managing Committee (EMC) is comprised of at least sixteen voting members, one Director as an ex-officio and a Secretary. The EMC from time to time solicit a consultant who provide technical and management advice in addition to its two advisers. The EMC has representation from every fishing community in the country, with each representative having one vote.
